Frequently Asked Questions About Massage Therapy in Grand Rapids

How much does a massage cost at Be Balanced Bodywork?

Massage prices start as low as $65 and reach $150 or more for longer sessions and signature experiences that combine multiple techniques and enhancements.

A 60-minute studio massage costs from $60 – $80. Your total depends on the service, appointment length, and any add-ons you choose.

Call or text (616) 375-9615 if you’d like help choosing a massage that fits your goals and budget.

Which massage should I book?

The right massage depends on how you’re feeling and what you want from your appointment.

  • Swedish massage: A good starting point for relaxation and a gentler experience.
  • Deep tissue massage: Focused work for muscle tension, with pressure adjusted to your comfort.
  • Custom massage: A session tailored to your preferred pressure, focus areas, and goals.
  • Signature massage: An experience combining massage techniques and enhancements.

If you’re unsure, explore our custom massage services or contact us for help choosing.

What should I expect at my first massage appointment?

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your goals, comfort preferences, and any relevant health concerns. Tell us about areas that need attention and anything you’d like us to avoid.

We’ll explain what to expect before beginning. During your massage, you can ask for changes to the pressure, positioning, or focus areas.

Please arrive 5–10 minutes early to settle in.

How long should my massage session be?

Your session length depends on how many areas you want addressed and how much time you’d like for focused work.

  • 30–45 minutes: A shorter session focused on a particular area.
  • 60 minutes: A broader session or attention to several focus areas.
  • 75–90 minutes: Extra time for detailed work and relaxation.
  • 105–120 minutes: An extended appointment with a slower pace and multiple focus areas.

Custom massage appointments range from 30 to 120 minutes. Available lengths vary by service.

Can you customize the pressure and focus areas?

Yes. Your massage can be adjusted around your comfort, preferences, and goals.

Let us know:

  • Whether you prefer lighter, moderate, or deeper pressure.
  • Which areas feel tight or need extra attention.
  • Which areas you’d like us to avoid.
  • Whether you prefer a quiet session.

You can request adjustments at any time. More pressure isn’t automatically better, and you don’t need to push through pain.

How often should I get a massage?

Your goals, schedule, budget, and response to each session all help determine the right frequency.

For general relaxation, you might choose a monthly appointment. If tension keeps returning, we can discuss whether a different schedule makes sense.

We’ll help you find a practical routine and adjust it as your needs change.

Which massage should I choose for back pain or muscle tension?

A custom massage is a helpful starting point because we can adapt the pressure and techniques to your comfort and symptoms.

Some people prefer focused deep tissue work, while others feel better with gentler techniques. Massage may provide short-term relief for some back pain, but no single style is best for everyone.

Tell us where you’re uncomfortable and what tends to trigger it. Persistent, worsening, or unexplained pain should also be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Can massage help improve my posture?

Massage may help ease muscle tension that makes sitting, standing, or moving uncomfortable. That can support more comfortable movement and make it easier to practice healthier daily habits.

Lasting changes also depend on movement, strength, mobility, and your routine. Massage can support those efforts, but it doesn’t permanently correct posture on its own.

Read more about how massage therapy supports posture correction over time.

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Manual lymphatic drainage, or MLD, uses light, rhythmic movements to encourage lymph fluid movement. It works close to the skin’s surface and feels much gentler than deep tissue massage.

If you’re considering MLD for swelling, lymphedema, or recovery after surgery, speak with your healthcare provider and contact us before booking.

Our article on what manual lymphatic drainage is explains the technique in more detail.

Should I drink water before or after a massage?

Yes– stay normally hydrated before and after your appointment. Drinking water throughout the day supports your overall health and normal muscle function.

You don’t need to force extra water or follow a special drinking schedule after your massage. If your healthcare provider has advised you to limit fluids, follow those instructions.
